On Tuesday afternoon, news of rappers Cardi B & Offset’s divorce spread across the internet like wildfire. The couple had been married for 3 years before deciding to call it quits due to Offset’s chronic infidelity. Of course as the news spread, so did the memes saying how the WAP should’ve secured her spot, but aht aht!!! That’s not even what we’re about to do. We’re not going to push the narrative that men cheat because women are lacking in certain areas. Instead, we’re going to use this as a teachable moment because there’s a lesson to be learned in everything.
Lesson 1: KNOW YOUR WORTH! Because of Cardi & Offset’s public relationship, we’ve seen their highs as well as their lows. When Offset initially cheated (to our knowledge), Cardi decided then that she was not settling for that and wanted to call it quits. After some public (and I’m sure private) persuasion, she decided to try again for the sake of their family. Once it became too much, our girl grabbed her Birkin and her baby and filed for divorce. The lesson here is: know your worth. Contrary to what the memes want to believe, if she cooked or cleaned, he would’ve still cheated. Why? Because he wanted to. So often, we try to find logical reasons for why people do the things they do when it’s really quite simple. People do things such as cheat because they WANT to. At that point, she had a choice to make. She could either continue to save face for the public, whom she does not know, or recognize that she deserves better and walk away. Thankfully, she knew her worth and chose the latter.
Lesson 2: OWN YOUR POWER! I’ll be honest, reading some of these think pieces online made me giggle A LOT! Who taught y’all that women are responsible for the behavior of men? Who taught y’all that men cheat because women are lacking or doing something wrong in the bedroom? Who taught y’all that walking away from situations and relationships and marriages that no longer serve us was weak? This is where owning your power comes into play. It takes an enormous amount of strength to walk away from something that isn’t serving your highest self. It takes power to make the decision to break your own heart by walking away from someone you love, but clearly doesn’t value you. It’ll also take to power to open her heart up to love again if she chooses to.
One thing we know for sure is Cardi will be fine! She has always been open and transparent about her journey and we have no doubts that she’ll bounce back from this stronger than ever.
