We all tuned into the People’s Choice Awards on Sunday night as the new normal unfolded, one more time, right in front of our eyes. Reporters and celebs standing six feet apart on the red carpet and award winners and performers presenting in front of a virtual audience. Although the thought that this may actually be the new way of things to come made me cringe, the PCA’s made it look phenomenal.
The fan’s did a great job with voting for public figures who truly earned their awards. Tracee Ellis-Ross rightfully won Fashion Icon of 2020. She gave a heart felt speech about her road to fashionista status that included shopping in her mom’s closet to her dad purchasing suede brown Ralph Lauren pants for her and defying all odds placed in front of her. Jennifer Lopez totally earned People’s Icon of the year. Jenny from the block has been iconic in fashion, acting, singing and giving show stopping performances, such as the one we saw during the Super Bowl. And to no surprise, Tyler Perry won People’s Champion. The self-made mogul talked about keeping his staff on payroll during the pandemic to keep families fed and comfortable in their homes.
While, black girl magic was on exhibit all night, from Tiffany Haddish winning Female Movie Star of the year, Leslie Jones taking home Comedy Act of 2020 and performances by Chloe X Halle. I just couldn’t help but wonder, where was Beyonce’? Now, I’m no Bee Hive member but a blind man could see that ‘Black is King’ is king, OK! Black is King is elite and in a lane of it’s own. Yet, Beyonce’ wasn’t nominated in the Female Artist category, Music Video of the year category, or for Album of the year. She definitely should have been in all three. Black is King is one of the best things that happened to music and film in 2020. So why didn’t Bey at lease get nominated for the body of art that Black is King is?
